Prof. Tiny received the EFFoST Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his outstanding leadership, vision, and pioneering efforts for his research on food quality, modelling the kinetic of the food reaction and his studies on Maillard reaction.
About Tiny van Boekel
After obtaining a BSc, MSc and PhD at Wageningen University, Tiny worked at Wageningen University, where he followed a career path from assistant professor to associate professor to full professor in the field of food science and technology. Within the cluster Food Sciences, he was head of the chair group Product Design and Quality Management from 2001 – 2012. His research and teaching interests concerned the question of how to realize food quality as wished by consumers from a technological and managerial perspective. This includes sensorial and health aspects of foods as well as sustainability of food production. One research line in this respect was the development of alternative protein sources for food. He is an expert in mathematical modeling of food quality attributes and kinetics, the Maillard reaction and in Dairy Science & Technology. He is author of some 240 peer-reviewed papers, author of 5 books, and editor of 4 books.
Prof. van Boekel was scientific director of the graduate school VLAG from 2006-2010. This graduate school is active in the field of food technology, nutrition, agrobiotechnology and health; the school coordinates research in this area and organizes advanced PhD courses.
From July 2012 till August 2017, he was Dean of Education and Director of the Education Institute of Wageningen University. This institute is responsible for the content of the 19 BSc and 30 MSc programmes offered at Wageningen University as well as the quality assurance of these programmes.
As of September 2017, he was appointed as special professor in Dairy Science & Technology within the chair group Food Quality & Design (FQD) until his retirement in April 2019. Currently, he acts as emeritus professor in Food Science (teaching, research, consultancy) and as food safety expert at Food Banks in the Netherlands.
