Prof. Gert Meijer received the Science to Society Award 2024

The EFFoST Board is honored to have awarded Dr. Gert Meijer the Science to Society Award 2024 during the EFFoST2024 conference, acknowledging his exceptional dedication to enhancing the relationship between scientific research and the broader societal needs of the food industry.

Through his leadership, he has demonstrated how scientific innovation can directly benefit communities, ensuring a safer, healthier, and more sustainable food system for all.

Every year, The Science to Society Award recognizes a distinguished food scientist whose work bridges the gap between scientific research and the societal needs of the food sector. This award celebrates individuals or organizations whose contributions have advanced the understanding and appreciation of the value of food science and technology to society. Prof. Meijer’s career exemplifies this vision through his tireless efforts in integrating scientific innovation with practical applications that enhance public health and align food industry practices with rigorous scientific and regulatory standards.

Prof. Gert Meijer currently serves as the Deputy Head of Corporate Regulatory and Scientific Affairs for Nestlé, based at their headquarters in Vevey, Switzerland, where he has been a key figure since 2013. In this role, he has been instrumental in ensuring that scientific advancements and regulatory frameworks work hand in hand to promote food safety, nutrition, and public health on a global scale.

As Chairman of the European Technology Platform “Food for Life” since 2015, Prof. Meijer has led initiatives that foster collaboration among industry, academia, and policy-makers, advancing shared goals for innovation in food technology that directly benefit society. His commitment to translating scientific research into practical applications has had a significant impact on the food industry, helping to address some of society’s most pressing nutritional and health challenges.

Prof. Meijer’s journey began in the Netherlands, where he earned a degree in Human Nutrition from Wageningen University, followed by a PhD from the University of Utrecht. He started his career at the National Institute of Public Health in the Netherlands before moving to Unilever R&D, where he dedicated nearly two decades to advancing research and development in nutrition and health. His last role at Unilever, as Global Vice-President of Nutrition & Health, highlighted his deep expertise and leadership in driving health-focused innovation in both the Netherlands and the USA.

Since 2012, Prof. Meijer has also served as a visiting professor at Ulster University in Northern Ireland, where he educates and inspires the next generation of professionals on the application of nutritional sciences within the food industry. His dedication to education underscores his commitment to empowering future leaders who will carry forward his legacy of science-driven societal impact.

During the 38th EFFoST International Conference held in November 2024, in the charming city of Bruges, the European Federation of Food Science and Technology (EFFoST) proudly awarded Prof. Gert Meijer with the prestigious Science to Society Award 2024, in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to advancing global nutrition, food safety, and scientific collaboration.
